The hospital currently has an exciting opportunity for a Night Sister with excellent interpersonal, and clinical skills to join them.

This role will entail taking responsibility for the overall clinical management and administration of the hospital at night on a rotational basis, so will be ward based when not on duty for Matron's Office.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Be responsible for the overall management and administration of the Hospital at night
  • Provide effective organisation of the ward to ensure the highest standards of patient-centred quality, service, care and safety are met and maintained
  • To be a visible role model and provide professional leadership and support to staff
  • Effectively liaise and co-operate with all wards and departments within the Hospital
  • Assist with management accounts and share responsibility for issues relating to the ward budget with the CNM
  • Establish systems and processes to ensure effective communication and continuity of patient care, liaising with multi-disciplinary/multi-agency teams, other healthcare organisations and community services


  • To be aware of and comply with the NMC Code for Nurses and EC directives
  • Maintain own professional and personal development in accordance with the NMC Code (2008), standards and professional guidelines
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with all patients, relatives, staff and consultants
  • Ensure that organisational goals are reflected in the nursing teams' objectives and in ward plans
  • Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement through the use of audit, patient feedback and reflection on practice by self and other members of the team


  • To provide a suitable environment for the physical and psychological wellbeing of patients, their relatives and staff by ensuring compliance with legislation and policies including health and safety, infection prevention and control, risk management and incident reporting
  • To ensure, through appropriate delegation to nurses and health care assistants, that evidence-based care is provided to agreed standards within the ward in accordance with hospital policy and procedures
  • Develop and maintain a culture of person-centred care within the ward and ensure the safety and quality of the patient's journey by effective planning and co-ordination of their care
  • To liaise with Resident Medical Officers and Consultants to ensure that appropriate care is provided
  • Ensure near misses, incidents, accidents and faulty devices are recorded, reported and investigated as per hospital policy.
  • To participate i the analysis, assessment and management of actual and potential risks within the ward environment, including responsibility for risk assessments i.e. Pregnancy, Clinical, Manual Handling, COSHH


  • Take responsibility for the overall clinical management and administration of the Hospital at night on a rotational basis
  • Co-ordinate emergency admissions and allocate beds appropriately
  • Ensure that Hospital policies and procedures are followed
  • To manage poor performance and practice of staff in line with Hospital policy
  • To challenge appropriately and confidently where standards of care fall below that which the Night Sister/Charge Nurse would expect
  • Attend relevant hospital meetings or send representative and impart necessary information to ward staffmasimo
  • To ensure equipment is regularly maintained and that all staff are competent and able to use equipment safely and correctly
