    Have yourself a healthy heart

Your heart works hard for you non – stop throughout your entire life, so it’s good to show it some TLC from time to time.

Referred to as a “fountain of youth” by Donald Lloyd – Jones, MD of the University Feinberg School of Medicine, making small changes to your lifestyle can have a real impact on your heart and will not only allow you to live a longer (and healthier) life, but you will significantly reduce the risks of fatal health implications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Essential tips for a healthy ticker

7 is the new magic number. The next time you’re tempted to stay up and watch the latest Game of Thrones (and don’t even try denying it), remember how comfy that pillow will feel and how good a full night’s sleep is for your heart. It is recommended that all adults aim to get at least 7 hours of quality sleep each night, anything less will have a long-term detrimental effect on the calcium – deficit within your arteries, increasing your risk of getting heart disease.

    Ease off the pressure

The cuff squeezing exercise performed at a Doctors appointment is more important than you may think. It is used to measure the amount of pressure flowing through your arteries with every heartbeat. If your blood pressure gets too high, your heart is forced to work at twice its capacity to get blood and oxygen around the body.
It’s recommended that you get your blood pressure checked every 3 – 5 years if you’re between 18 – 39. For those 40 and above, you should be getting it checked every year.

    Move more

Experts suggest that you should aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day to maintain a healthy heart (and lifestyle).
Break up long periods of sitting and stand or walk while doing things like talking on the phone or watching TV. Basically, if you’re doing nothing, do something. And if you’re doing something, do more.

Eat healthy fats, NOT trans fats

Whether you choose to believe it or not, it’s vital that we include fats into our diet. These are of course saturated and polyunsaturated fats. Fats to avoid are trans fats which are often found in fast foods, margarines and processed foods. Make sure you read all food labels and check out the trans fat content, you should ideally only be eating foods with 0 trans fat.

The BHF battle with heart disease

For the past 2 years Cavendish have partnered with The British Heart Foundation, a charity which funds research into circulatory diseases and their risk factors.
Through funding and donations, the charity funds over £100 million of research every year into beating heartbreak forever.
As a dedicated charity partner, we have taken part in numerous fundraising events over the past few years. To name a few:

    – Sky Dive
    – Tube collection at Mansion House
    – Chicago Marathon
    – Royal Parks Half Marathon
    – Company Quiz
    – London Marathon 2019

    And much, much more!

Mark Liston, an Account Manager at Cavendish Professionals recently threw himself into the deep end and ran the London Marathon in aid of The British Heart Foundation raising over £7,000 for this one event. This now brings our total fundraising efforts so far to an outstanding £12,365.00!

Our target for the year is £15,000, and we plan on hitting this and going way above by the end of the year. With our next event (The Tower of London Run) just around the corner, we are now more excited than ever to smash this fundraising target!

If you’d like to find out more information on The British Heart Foundation and how YOU can contribute to making a real difference to those with a heart disease, find out more information via https://www.bhf.org.uk/.
