    Stress Awareness Month 2023

Established in 1992, Stress Awareness Month aims to increase awareness of the struggles people suffer each day, associated with stress. The month of April each year provides an opportunity for open discussions on the causes and effects of stress. Stress Awareness month aims to eliminate the stigma, guilt, and shame associated with mental health.

This year’s Stress Awareness Months theme is #ACTNOW, (Action Changes Things). In previous years, particular themes aimed to encourage conversations between people, providing a safe space to speak up. This year the Stress Management Society are stepping things up by inviting people to go beyond talking and campaign for action, by ensuring people are responsible in creating a positive change.

    Stress Management

Guided Meditation – One of the best ways of getting away from the stress and strains of daily life in through guided meditation. Five minutes of focused relaxation can have a big impact on your body and mind. Free guided meditations are easily accessible online, there are also more advanced sessions available through mediation specialists.

Physical Activity & Good Nutrition – Two components that are essential for stress management is regular exercise and maintaining a healthily diet. Exercise has been proven to relieve many forms of stress and is a great way of improving your overall quality of life. Ensuring that you are consuming the correct nutrition will keep your body healthy, reducing the risk of extreme stress. Healthy body, healthy mind.

Deep Breathing – It is important to find some method to manage your stress. Not every method works for everyone. Deep breathing is another form of stress management that reduces the activation of your sympathetic nervous system, controlling the body’s response to fight or flight to a potential threat. Deep breathing also activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, allowing you to rest and digest.

Connecting with friends – Human connection is extremely important to feel supported. Ensuring you have a number of people around you that you can lean on when you need support or when you are under extreme stress is essential. Speaking to someone can often help you feel less alone in your stressful times.
