How to answer the question ‘Tell me about yourself?’

This question is frequently used as an ice-breaker and is a very important one! Your answers could set the tone for the rest of the interview. Many candidates find this question tricky, as they wonder what the interviewer actually wants to know and how they should tailor their response. Remember, your approach needs to be pertinent to the job that you are applying for – the interviewer wants to know whether you are a good fit for the company. Of course they will be assessing your experience and skill set, but they also want to see your personality. Here’s what our team had to say…

    Prepare and practice

Think about this question before going for the interview. Your reply needs to make you stand out from the crowd. Read through the job description and list down the strengths which you believe will complement the role requirements. You need to focus on highlighting the factors that will make the interviewer think you are a perfect fit for this role.
Practice makes perfect! So spend some time going over what you want to say and how best to say it. If in doubt, ask a friend to rehearse with you.

Talk about your past experiences and achievements

Give an overview of your educational achievements, especially those required for the position. You can also mention why you have decided to enter this particular industry – what drew you towards it? Reference your previous roles and focus on how the skills you have acquired will contribute to the job you’re interviewing for.

Talk about your current situation and goals

This is a good time to let the panel know the reason why you are interested in joining their company. Discuss why you are looking for a new job, whether it’s because of career progression or other factors. It is important to show that you’re looking to stay with the company for a while. Don’t forget to mention your professional objectives –this means how you would like your career to develop, not your personal goal to go skydiving!

Conclude with your strengths and unique value

This is a good time to focus on what you can bring to the table if you join their company.  Depending on the role that you’re applying for, emphasize your unique value. For example: if you are applying for a managerial role, focus on your excellent managerial skills.

Overall, take your time to think about and practice answering this question as it will definitely help in landing that dream job.
