To name a few, situations such as slips or falls, loud and consistent noise, working in high places and airborne irritations and diseases have rightly become a primary concern when addressing the workers’ wellbeing and livelihood. The foremost point being that the main priority for a company is to ensure the worker’s are well accommodated in an environment contusive to outputting their best work. Other potential risks could include Airborne Fibres & Materials as many construction sites produce a lot of dust, usually a fine, toxic mixture of hazardous materials and fibres that can damage the lungs, alternatively there is the consideration of the safe and effective use of power tools, which, with some clear guidelines and restriction, could lead to an overall boost in efficiency and communication, resulting in a better work output.

What about a career as a safety officer?

In regard to personnel, a construction safety officer would be in charge of inspecting site conditions to determine if hazards are present and to establish procedures and policies to overcome those hazardous situations. Their main focus would be to diminish or eliminate work-related accidents. However, if an accident occurs, the safety officer will conduct a safety investigation to determine root causes, what procedures may have gone wrong, and to gather the evidence necessary to identify the cause of the accident. However, alongside this, the safety officer determines what type of personal protective equipment (PPE) is needed and makes sure that workers know how to operate and use tools and equipment.

What safety training do general workers receive?

Construction businesses must strategize and place larger emphasis on training as well as monitoring all necessary equipment and ensuring that it is updated and maintained in a proper manner. Along with site managers and site supervisors introducing safety measures, workers must be trained in how to prevent accidents, provide basic first aid, and prevent long-term physical harm.

There a range of safety courses provided by different organisations, such as abco safety, that inform and teach construction workers valuable information about their workspace. Their courses provide the core knowledge workers need to stay safe and embeds the good understanding and techniques needed to keep others safe too.
