Making Work-Related New Year’s Resolutions

28 Dec

With January 1st just around the corner, it’s likely that many of us will be thinking about making New Year’s Resolutions. Centring your resolutions around your career goals is a great way to inspire yourself for the year ahead, so we put together some tips to help you achieve bigger and better things for 2017!

1. Be more efficient
This one seems like a no-brainer at first. Of course, working more efficiently will help you to achieve your goals at work! But working with efficacy involves more than simply working quickly.

Structuring and planning your day, setting yourself deadlines and learning to prioritise tasks are all skills that will help you to improve the way you work. For those of us who like to utilise technology to help us achieve, apps such as Asana and Trello are excellent for managing projects and keeping track of tasks.

2. Step out of your comfort zone
Make a conscious effort to push yourself professionally this year. This could range from speaking to your boss or manager about taking on more responsibility, to making the decision to leave your current role and search for something more challenging.

3. Pay attention to – and utilise - your talents
Career progression is all about professional development. If there’s a course that will enable you to advance and improve your professional skills – take it! Unsure of what your skills are? Try asking a friend, or a colleague you trust, to list 5 things that they think you do well. You might be pleasantly surprised!

4. Raise your profile
Never underestimate the power of networking! If you’re working in an industry that has lots of events, try to attend as many of them as possible and have a conversation with at least two people you don’t know.

Your online presence is also important, are you active on LinkedIn or Twitter? Do you have your own website? Being well connected makes you an asset to employers, and shows that you are interested and engaged with your industry.

5. Look after yourself
Between work, home and social responsibilities many of us forget to take the time to look after ourselves. Self-care doesn’t just mean exercising
regularly – it extends to things such as being mindful of your mental state and maintaining your health and energy levels by keeping a regular sleeping pattern and eating well.

Finally – try practicing good sleep hygiene by switching off your devices at least 45 minutes before bedtime. You’ll sleep better for it!

6. Preserve your focus

Most companies will hold assessments or employee reviews on a quarterly basis to evaluate progress and set new goals for the next few months. If you have a resolution that you are serious about sticking to, schedule an “assessment” with yourself.

Set a time and date to sit down and evaluate the progress you have made so far and identify the key objectives of the next few months. Doing this establishes a sense of “accountability”, which is important for self-motivation and discipline.

7. Have fun!
Try not to get so bogged down in making plans and setting goals that you forget to enjoy yourself along the way!

Good luck for 2017!
